If you read my blogs regularly you will likely know that I have sensitive skin. In recent years, this hasn’t been such a big problem for me but I am regularly asked how to manage sensitive skin. In this video I review why sensitive skin occurs, how you can help minimise skin reactions using topical ingredients and what dietary and lifestyle changes you can make to help improve your skin. I have also previously written a Sensitive Skin Information Page about sensitive skin which you can review here.

Hi Ananda,

Thanks so much! I actually do think the black soap is drying me out as it is getting colder and drier out here in the US, and I think I am as a result getting more breakouts again. (especially in the forehead are, some in the chin). My cheeks are normal and rarely have a breakout of any kind on them. Any suggestions for a cleanser I should switch to and what sort of moistruizing / spot treatment regimen to go on? (Currently using the Alaffia Liquid Black Soap and Mukti aloe vera moisturizer in the mornings, with Neutrogena salicylic acid spot treatment on trouble zones at night.) Please help!

Hi Carley, thanks for your feedback. If the black soap is too drying during winter, move away from any kind of foaming cleanser and over to a gel cleanser. These are milder on the skin and less likely to disrupt the acid. Drying out your skin by using strong cleansers too much will leave it more prone to scaring and ultimately won’t stop breakouts (as you know from your own experience). Good gel cleansers I can recommend include Mukti Gentle Foaming Cleanser (it actually doesn’t foam at all) or Haven Scent Foaming Cleanser (again a gel with no foaming). As I write this I am aware that choosing a cleanser can be confusing mainly because even gel cleansers are named foaming cleansers. I think I am going to suggest that a new cleanser category is created so that gel cleansers are recognised as distinct from foaming cleansers. For your information cleansers go from strongest to most gentle in this order: foaming – gel – milk – cream. For you I recommend a foaming cleanser in Summer and a gel cleanser in Winter. Let me know how you go.

Hi Christina,
Thank you for your lovely comment. Well I can tell you what I am using at the moment and I have to admit, my skin has improved with these products:
Cleanser – morning & night: Haven Scent Foaming Cleanser (it is a gel and so doesn’t really foam). I use a microfibre cloth with this to take off eye makeup (a wash cloth will do).
Day Moisturiser – Devita Solar Protect SPF 30
Eye Cream – La Mav Firming Eye Lotion
Night Treatment – Devita C Accelerate (vitamin C serum)
Night Serum – Remedica Vital Visage – I am in LOVE with this product and think this with the Vitamin C is what has really made a difference to my skin.
My skin is dry in winter and combination in Summer so I do change my products around with changes in season. Please let me know if you have any more questions. A

Hi Ananda! Thanks for posting the products you use. Is there a reason why you don’t use African Black Soap right now? Is it still something you would recommend for skin that is sensitive and break-out prone? Also, one more thing: have you ever heard anything about Liquid Back Soap? I live in the US and found a product by Alaffia and it only has unrefined shea butter and palm kernel oil. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Carley. I use it in Summer when my skin is normal to combination. In Winter I like a gel or lotion cleanser as my skin tends to be very dry. While black soap is amazing, with the dry weather and dry skin in winter, it is a little too drying for me. In about a month I will change back over to black soap though. It is so simple to use and cleans so well…I love it – well most of the year anyway! A
