I was shocked and dismayed to read on Clean Life blog (one of my favorites) recently that a popular Australian brand has been found out to be a complete greenwash. Well actually I can go further because Natural Instincts was completely misleading the public about the ingredients in their products. I had a moment when I considered whether or not to write about this topic at all as I don’t like to “run down” other brands, however, I cannot bring myself to hold back about this deception as it affects the whole industry.
An except from the Clean Life Blog: “The company has been found to guilty of deliberately failing to list all ingredients on the on the ingredients lists such as Sodium Laureth Sulphate, listing some chemicals by incorrect names, and claiming that some products are “made from 100% pure oils and certified organic herbs” when in fact, only a very minor proportion of the product uses these. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has told it to publish corrective notices in newspapers & magazine.”

One of the points made in the Clean Life blog is that it is up to us to stay informed about what is in our products. I will also add that you should be able to trust the suppliers of your favorite brands to be transparent with the products they sell and manufacture. To look at Vitale’s product guarantee click here. In addition, Clean Life has come up with some great resources to arm yourself with knowledge about labelling:
What you can do to protect your family:
1) Learn to read labels, our labelling legislation in Australia is incredibly weak, read more about it here;
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/cleantips/labelling_myths.html
2) Learn which chemicals need to be avoided and clean out your bathroom cupboard now
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/cleantips03.htm
3) Choose products from reputable companies, like those on the CleanLife directory
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/complist.htm
4) Ensure that you seek the full refund for any products you have purchased that many have been affected.
993300;">To compensate customers who purchased Natural Instinct products and believe they have been misled, Natural Instinct is offering a refund for the full purchase price of affected products. For more information about claims for refunds contact Edwina Pearce of Natural Instinct on 1800 771 063 or at customerservice@natural instinct.com.au by 6 June 2009.
And I second Clean Life when I say – please forward this information on to as many people as you can.

Twitter It!Ananda, we women are so susceptible to trusting the claims of the manufacturers, because usually we trust easily. I thought it was amusing to hear the term ‘greenwashed’ but I completely get why it was necessary to come up with a description. It seems that even in the natural and organic arena, where we’d like to think it’s all touchy-feely and trusty, there are opportunists who are out for the quick buck… sad, disgusting, and buyer beware, as ever.
Thanks for the info!!

Hi and thanks for writing this article. I appreciate your concerns, but congratulate you on making the decision to inform others.
As a person interested in purchasing products that have less chemicals, I am dismayed by Natural Instincts lack of integrity and will now avoid purchasing these products. I just looked on their website and the section for ingredients is “being updated”. Enough said really!!!!

Thanks for your comment Belinda. It is such a shame that consumers have been mislead but on the other hand good that the issue was brought to light. Transparency is important.

Good on you with the Natural Instinct article, I am so sick of seeing these products in every chemist and health food store I walk into and I never hesitate to tell them why! All you need to do is try a few of their products, they are all the same, they have a white plastic feel and cannot possibly contain any of what they say and be such a ridiculously low price for bulk containers. It has annoyed me for ages because it makes it really hard for those of us actually using organics to educate consumers and market our product.

Hi Ananda,
I have just received your Newsletter and was particularly interested in your views on “Natural Instinct” products.
I am very glad that you and Clean life have informed the consumer and exposed this Company for what it is.
I do promotions on my products at Health Stores in big shopping centers where they sell my products to mainly educate people on natural products and why my Hair care products are beneficial to the user and at the same time to make people aware of the existence of my product.
During my promotions, I come across ‘Natural Instinct’ all the time, its constantly in my face and unfortunately I have to compete with this product mainly because of it’s low price, (not quality of course as you know) therefore the consumer prefers to buy ‘Natural Instinct’ because to them its more economical, therefore for me and small companies like mine, miss out on sales and sometimes pushed out of the market because of ‘Natural Instinct” low price tag.
Very very annoying for me to see people being drawn to this product mainly because of the low price and nothing else. I often tell people when I can, (and I am not afraid to) that they are been misled by this Company because you can not possibly buy a real natural product for that price. One of my clients of a Health Store in a major shopping center in Victoria knowing how bad it is still sells it in big quantities and sadly he doesn’t seem to care if it’s harmful or not, as long as he sells it and makes money.
It’s all about money!
The staff who works there is not very happy to sell it to the consumer after discovering the real story behind ‘Natural Instinct’ but again there’s nothing they can do about it. I was at this very store on Tuesday to do a Promo and I did warn some people about the product. As a matter of fact a lady came in to look for a new shampoo to use because after using ‘Natural instinct’ her hair were starting to fall out, her scalp was in a bad itchy state and inflamed and she wondered why that was happening and when I informed her about how damaging this product is to one’s health, she couldn’t believe it because ‘Natural Instinct’ posters and all the other advertising material STILL says ALL NATURAL, NON TOXIC etc., etc., she could not believe it and became very annoyed, so I showed her mine and she bought it, and the next day I accidentally bumped in to her at another shopping center and she was so glad to see me and the first thing she said to me, “please don’t ever stop making your shampoo because I have only used it once since I bought it and its the best thing it could have happened to my scalp, look the redness has gone my scalp feels 100 percent better than what it was”.
Anyway I thought you may want to know what is going on here in Victoria with ‘Natural Instinct’ and now also ‘Natural Organics”. These Company is a cult they successfully brainwash the consumer in believing that ‘Natural Instinct’ is totally natural and keep making money out of their lies, where’s the justice?

Hi Amanda
I have used natural Instinct for quite some time & encouraged my daughter to use it as well. When it first came onto the market I think their claims were correct. I checked it out very carefully and it used to have the 100% organic label on the front – which at the time was correct. But both my daughter & I had found over the last 18 months – 2 years that our skin rashes were returning. It wasn’t until I read an article in the West Australian newspaper that I realised it was probably the Natural Instinct products – & I was shocked. I did some research & found the original company had been sold – but to who? I couldn’t find out. So I think that maybe the new owners are cost cutting. If you look at the bottles now the ‘organic’ symbol has been replaced with ’100% Australian Owned’ and at a glance looks similar to the old symbol. Nasty people!!!

Hi Patricia. It is interesting that I have had so many similar comments since this blog going on-line. Clients are telling me about itchy scalps, rashes returning and dry skin patches. And yes I agree, it is since the company has been sold that the cost cutting has occurred. I have heard that the name was sold on but not the original formulations but I don’t know for sure.

Hi
Sorry to disapoint Patricia but the claims NI made were never correct – they only removed the 100% organic logo because it was a “made up” logo and it drew attention from people in the industry that knew it was greenwash – their formulations have never been truthful from the get go.
sorry to bear bad news but I have been telling people this from the beginning of that comapanies inception – it is not something that can be blamed on new owners ( if indeed that is true)

[...] is an article that I wrote last year which following on from the “Natural Instinct” article I thought warranted another viewing. It addresses issues of greenwashing and looks [...]
I emailed a complaint to Natural Instinct following the articles I read about them and they never replied! I happily chucked both products in the bin but am very annoyed that they didn’t even respond. There are too many companies willing to lie and mislead, take your money and then not deal with the consequences but make a profit anyway. I look forward to more name and shame articles.

Hi Sandy…sometimes we have to trust our own “natural instincts”. I, along with some other of my industry contacts couldn’t understand why the range was so inexpensive. Now we know that it is due to cheap, synthetic raw materials. Next time I will follow up my hunches.
