The other day I was browsing one of my favourite research sites www.ewg.org and I came across their list of Safe Shopping Tips for skincare. It is a useful list but I thought that it could be added to and so here an extended version of the Safe Shopping List from the Environmental Working Group:

Chemicals in Skin Care
true. If in doubt ask the manufacturer or retailer for proof of label claim.
I would love to hear if you can add any other safe shopping tips when it comes to skin care. Or if you have had any adverse reactions to skin care of any type, conventional or natural.

I don’t normally add comments, but decided I would share my thoughts on some products I purchased from you a few weeks back. I am one of those who is gradually changing to natural as I run out (too expensive otherwise) and I am now using the Remedica African products and love them!! The Black soap face wash is brilliant -its the best clean I have ever had from a product. I have normal/oily skin with large pores, but my skin is a bit sensitive too, and I could never find anything that was gentle but strong enough to get the ‘rubbish’ out of my pores – I could literally see the build up in there, it was gross. I was getting pimples along my jawline, but after a couple of days of using the black soap face wash, they were almost completely gone! I use it on my shoulders and top of my back too with the same result! I am thinking of trying the Minerelle make up too, sounds like it might help with the pore build up….The Remedica body butter is a bit too strong for my upper body, but my legs get really dry so I find it is really good for them. I found the Body scrub is enough moisture for the shoulders and torso without being really greasy. I also treated myself to one of the Zoya nail polishes and have found it to be just as long lasting as normal nail polish. I can highly recommend these products and the bonus is they are roughly the same price as other cosmetics anyway. Now I just have to work out which shampoo/conditioner to buy as I am nearing the end of my bottles!!! Decisions..! I can honestly say I don’t look at any skin care, make up or any cosmetics at all anymore. You really seem to be a one stop shop, and for a mum with a little one, getting to the shops can be a bit of a nightmare so thanks for the convenience of shopping at home!!

Great, specific pointers. Thank you!
It’s important to consider the ingredients in all the products used on hair and skin. Research is showing a buildup of chemicals on the skin can cause acne, dryness (which leads to prematurely aging skin) and skin cancer.
With so many manufacturers using chemicals in their products, almost any product – cleansers, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, hair gels and sunscreens – can be causing breakouts on your face and body.
Here’s a page that shows what to look for in organic products as well as ingredients to avoid in skin and hair care products. http://www.best-mens-skin-care.com/organic-skin-care.html
To find chemical-free products, read labels and research ingredients – or start with certified organic ingredients which don’t contain harmful chemicals.

[...] Safe Shopping Guide for Skin Care [...]
Our Noble Formula Bar Soap with Pyrithione Zinc is very moisturizing.
Ingredients are:
Saponified Olive Oil infused with calendula, Saponified Emu Oil, 2% Pyrithione Zinc (combats flake, itch, dandruff), Oatmeal. It is a true cold process soap. Feels almost oily as you wash, but rinses clean.
My 31 yr old daughter keeps her hands from cracking & bleeding, by using this soap. 23 yr old bought expensive face products for her occasional breakouts. It made her skin so much worse. She switched to NF Bar Soap with excellent results. Works on oily T-zone as it cleans while moisturizing, thus not inducing the skin to produce more oil. The bar lasts a long time.
We’ve recently developed a variation on the above, replacing the Emu Oil with Shea Butter, for those who wish an ‘animal free’ product.
I work for a physician owned company, selling products used mostly for problem skin (eczema, psoriais, seborhea, etc) but have great ‘general use’ products also. Noble Formula products contain the Pyrithione Zinc (ZnP). Noble Mystique products do not contain the ZnP.
Thanks, Lorelei

Hi Jahna – thank you so much for your lovely comments. I love black soap too and I use it every day. It is so good to hear you are getting such great results. For someone that doesn’t usually comment, yours is fabulous! Ananda
